LMB Facilitates Learning Event on the Youth Leadership Training Program
The Land Management Bureau (LMB) facilitated a two-(2) day training regarding the learning event entitled, “Youth Leadership Training Program,” on June 24-25,2024 at Hotel Dreamworld, Quezon City. The purpose of the event is to provide an understanding of leadership among the youth and equip them with the necessary skills as the next leaders of the bureau who can act with integrity and accountability.
To formally open the program, the Assistant Director, Engr. Romeo P. Verzosa gave his welcoming remarks and recognized the potential of youth to make a significant impact, especially as future leaders in the LMB. He said the training program is designed to hone the youth with the knowledge and mindset needed to navigate organizational challenges effectively and seize opportunities confidently. Moreover, he emphasized that leadership is not defined by age but by action and vision.
Mr. Edwin Karl B. Basa, a licensed Psychometrician, Volunteer Lead for Luzon at I am Making a Difference (MAD) Volunteers, Inc., and Principal HR Services Center Administrator from McDermott Philippines, Inc. led the four sessions on youth leadership training. The first session revolved around the theories of various scholars worldwide about the idea of leadership. Thereafter, he enumerated the different leadership styles and specify the leadership qualities. The second session dealt with the importance of leadership among the youth. Mr. Basa showed statistics about the present condition of youth in employment, politics, businesses, and several industries. He identified the youth personalities who excelled in their careers and became leaders in their organizations.
Further, he mentioned the challenges youth face today in leading diverse institutions such as having Imposter Syndrome, lacking empathy for others, giving and receiving feedback, and proving competence and skills.
Accordingly, Mr. Basa explained the steps to overcome such challenges like how to set goals; evaluate and create a reward mechanism; seek feedback and support; undergo mentorship; learn new hard and soft skills; align goals and needs, and take action.
In the third session, Mr. Basa guided the participants to gain self-awareness by identifying strengths and weaknesses. He facilitated the activities through two psychological assessment tools. The first one is the Four Temperaments Test where participants were able to identify their leadership styles. On the other hand, the second assessment tool used by Mr. Basa is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Personality Test where participants scored themselves to identify their personality types, as well as the strengths they possess as a leader and the shortcomings they need to work on.
Lastly, the second day of the training focuses on how to equip the youth with the necessary skills to become the next generation of leaders. Mr. Basa gave pieces of advice on how to improve leadership communication. Furthermore, he defined accountability and its pivotal role in leadership in an organization.
To officially close the learning event, Mr. Alex C. Pascua, Head of Administrative Support Staff and OIC Chief of Land Management Division, delivered his closing message emphasizing the importance of this training, especially since LMB has retiring officials in the next few years and the need for the youth to step up became more evident. He mentioned some leaders in various countries that youth can imitate their best practices to empower themselves. He hoped that the youth participants would be the next leaders of LMB who would carry on the legacy they built on and would introduce best practices for the improvement of the organization.
